The bill in question is the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act sponsored by Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey, the chairman of the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus.
It essentially combines all of the many different provisions pro-life advocates have pressed for in numerous bills covering various federal agencies and programs stopping abortion funding that have to be renewed annually and makes them permanent federal law. Douglas Johnson, the legislative director of the National Right to Life Committee, talked with LifeNews.com about the need for the measure and political hurdles it faces. “In just two years, President Obama and his allies in Congress have established multiple new pipelines to subsidize abortion and abortion providers. These setbacks underscore the urgent need for enactment of a permanent, government-wide ban on federal funding of abortion — a ban that would endure no matter who is in the White House,” he said. The House is expected to take up the measure, which Republican leaders put in their Pledge With America, but, after an expected passage in the House, the fate of the legislation is in the hands of Senate Democrats and President Barack Obama, and both support abortion funding at taxpayer expense. read more Comments are closed.
