H.R. 2164, Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2012, would ban human cloning all over the U.S. This is actually a remarkable bill. Why? Because most other “bans on human cloning” do nothing of the sort.
This cloning slight-of-hand works. Back in 2006, Missouri voted on and passed Amendment 2 that said it “banned human cloning.” It did not. It only banned the transfer of cloned embryos to a womb. The propaganda before the vote was so duplicitous that a group of scientists wrote an open letter to the people of Missouri to try and cut through the confusion. They concluded: …the people of Missouri should know what they are actually voting on. Amendment 2 creates a constitutional right for researchers to engage in human cloning. Efforts to deny this are misleading and deceptive. The legislation proposed to the U.S. Congress by Rep. Harris is a TRUE ban on human cloning. It bans all SCNT in humans. H.R. 2164 states: (1) some individuals have announced that they will attempt to clone human beings using the technique known as somatic cell nuclear transfer already used with limited success in sheep and other animals;… (8) in order to be effective, a ban on human cloning must stop the cloning process at the beginning because– (A) cloning would take place within the privacy of a doctor-patient relationship; (B) the transfer of embryos to begin a pregnancy is a simple procedure; and (C) any government effort to prevent the transfer of an existing embryo, or to prevent birth once the transfer has occurred, would raise substantial moral, legal, and practical issues, so that it will be nearly impossible to prevent attempts at ‘reproductive cloning’ once cloned human embryos are available in the laboratory;… The bill goes on to define human cloning properly, as the creation of human embryos through asexual means, regardless of whether those embryos would be transferred to a woman or destroyed for research. Thousands of children have survived abortions in the forty years following the national legalization of abortion in 1973.
Just eight years after Roe v. Wade, Liz Jeffries and Rick Edmonds were named Pulitzer Prize finalists for theirseries on the live-birth abortions already epidemic in the abortion industry. Jeffries and Edmonds recorded heartbreaking testimonies from nurses who held and comforted dying abortion survivors. Procedures have evolved since the seventies and eighties in an effort to more effectively kill the child in the womb. For example, less than 1% of abortions performed now are saline abortions, previously a method of choice. However, evidence clearly shows that infants are still born alive. Most of these are left to die. In 2011, the CDC recorded 1,298 cases of infant death in the U.S. due to “Other perinatal conditions,” which includes ICD-10 category P96.4, death subsequent to a failed “termination of pregnancy.” Numbers have not been released for the particular category. If they ever are, we can expect them to be far lower than the actual death toll. As Dr. Cates reminded us, there is no “reliable voluntary reporting of live birth” after abortion. In 2007, a study published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology concluded that about 1 in 30 abortions after 16 weeks’ gestation result in a born-alive infant. At 23 weeks’ gestation, the number reached 9.7%. By a very conservative estimate, this study would suggest that over 900 babies survive late-term abortions each year in the U.S (read full article) With the revelation that the Obama Administration's Internal Revenue Service harassed and beleaguered groups seeking tax exemption status if their names included "Tea Party" or "Patriots," and then later admitting they targeted groups with purposes of promoting limited government and other conservative missions, questions are being raised about other targeted groups.
Were pro-life groups also a target of the staunchly pro-abortion Obama Administration? Chicago's Thomas More Society reported first dealing with IRS concerns from pro-life groups as early as 2009. When the Coalition for Life of Iowa sought tax exemption status in 2009, the IRS sought details about the content of members’ prayers at a Planned Parenthood facility. They also demanded that the group refrain both from activities that could be construed as protesting or picketing by police, and to cease activities that could be seen as confrontational or harassing by abortion-seeking clients. Thomas More Society said the IRS insisted that “every member of the board of directors of the Coalition sign a statement, under penalty of perjury, that they will not picket or protest or organize others to picket or protest outside of Planned Parenthood.” (read more) The jury in the murder trial of abortion practitioner Kermit Gosnell returned a verdict and found him guilty on three of the four first-degree murder charges he faced.
Gosnell was found guilty of killing Baby A, Baby C and Baby D and found not guilty of killing Baby E. He was also convicted on hundreds of lesser charges ranging from infanticide to running a corrupt organization. The guilty verdict on these three counts subjects the abortion “doctor” to the potential he will face the death penalty when a second jury considers his sentencing on the convictions. The jury that will be tasked with sentencing Gosnell on the convictions will begin its work on May 21. Gonell was also found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of patient Karnamaya Mongar, who died after a botched abortion. And he was found guilty on most of the more than 200 counts of violating Pennsylvania’s informed consent law. The amended bill passed the Senate with a veto-proof majority of 23 to 7. Amendments to the bill require that the House vote to confirm the Senate amendments. The bill will then move to the Governor's desk.
"This legislation bans web-cam abortions in Missouri and ensures that women will meet with a doctor in person at the time she begins the RU 486 abortion. This legislation protects women from those in the abortion industry who seek to profit from RU 486 abortions by providing sub-standard care to women," said Pam Fichter, president of Missouri Right to Life. After two weeks of deliberations — with much of it spent getting an understanding of how to apply the law from the judge in the case and listening again to testimony of Gosnell staffers about how he and his staff killed babies in abortions and infanticides — the jury has no verdict. Bryan Kemper of the pro-life group Stand True has been closely monitoring the case and put it in perspective for pro-life people getting impatient about a verdict. “Everyone needs to understand the jury must have 227 verdicts, not just one in the Gosnell murder trial. This can take a long time. (read full article) Local journalist J.D. Mullane has been the most dogged reporter following the murder trial of Kermit Gosnell. When most media outlets ignored the trial of the abortion practitioner, Mullane was there chronicling every day of it.
In a new interview with pro-life former governor and Fox News host Mike Huckabee, Mullane talks about how the power of what Gosnell did changed one reporter’s mind on abortion. “That’s the power of the Gosnell trial,” he said. “There is one journalist sitting in that courtroom who writes for a local publication who has told me that he is very liberal, very pro-choice, but after sitting through the testimony in the Gosnell trial, he’s reconsidered. He’s changed his mind,” Mullane says in the interview .
