(updates here) The U.S. House voted to halt the taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood. H.R. 3762 places a one-year freeze on certain federal payments to the abortion giant, and blocks at least 89 percent of Planned Parenthood's federal funding. The final vote count was 240-189 with all six Missouri Republicans voting yes; both Democrats voted no. The measure now heads to the U.S. Senate.
Abortion supporters claim that funding PP is necessary for women's health care, but when PP is defunded with our federal tax dollars, women will have at least 588 places to go for a broader range of high quality health care services. (link to more news from Missouri Right to Life) The list of "Top Schools for Pregnant & Parenting Students" is led by The College of St. Mary (Omaha, NE), a Catholic, all-women's university that hosts a nationally recognized "Mothers Living & Learning" program for single moms. Also among the list of 11 schools are Belmont Abbey College (Belmont, NC), St. Catherine University (St. Paul, MN), University of Notre Dame (South Bend, IN), Texas A&M University (College Station, TX), and Brigham Young University (Provo, UT).
According to Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, college-age women report the highest number of abortions. She says by creating this list, her group hopes to inspire other schools to offer additional resources for students facing unexpected pregnancies.
