GOP leader Mitch McConnell threw his weight against the bill in recent days, saying it was in his words "unbelievable" that Democrats would try to muscle through in just a few days legislation that usually takes months to debate. Reid said he would work with McConnell to produce a short-term funding bill to keep the government running into early next year. read more Senate Democrats introduced an omnibus spending bill on Tuesday to keep the federal government running into the next fiscal year and the measure contains abortion concerns.
Family Research Council president Tony Perkins says pro-life advocates should be worried about what the bill contains. The omnibus contains more than $1 billion in funding for programs initiated by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as the ObamaCare law that allows for abortion funding. It allocates $750 million from the Prevention and Public Health Fund “slush fund” for a variety of programs that could lead to abortion funding. It also includes a $175.9 million “adjustment” in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Program Management account to implement the massive Medicaid expansion and cuts to Medicare Advantage that could lead to rationing of health care. Perkins explains, “Among other concerns, taxpayer funds could be used for abortions in D.C., $740 million would go toward international population control, and Title X funds would get a multi-million dollar boost.” The international family planning funding is an increase over the year prior and the second increase in a row during the Obama administration — putting more money in the pockets of the Planned Parenthood abortion business. read more In reaction to the Senate Democrats’ release of a 1,900 page, $1.1 trillion budget proposal, Republican leaders announced they will not support the measure if it is brought to the floor this year, citing concerns with the size, cost and limited time for debate.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said he would rather pass a short-term spending patch to fund the government instead of jamming through the omnibus bill before Christmas. Although both parties have worked together throughout the year to write the spending measure, today was the first time that most policymakers saw it in completion. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced Tuesday that he wants it passed before the next Congress begins on Jan. 5. read more Doctors in Germany say they have cured an American living there who has the HIV/AIDS virus by using a treatment based on adult stem cells, the more ethical form of stem cell research.
In 2008, German doctors reported they had used a selective adult stem cell transplant to treat a leukemia patient. The treatment had a side effect — that the transplant also removed his HIV infection. After the transplant, the virus was undetectable in his bloodstream for at least two years and he no longer took antiretroviral drugs. read more Lt. Governor Peter Kinder released the following statement after a federal judge in Virginia has ruled that parts of the new federal health law are unconstitutional:
"Today's ruling is a victory not only for the people of the United States, but also for the freedoms we hold so dear. Judge Hudson's ruling confirms what many of us believed to be true nearly one year ago; that congress overstepped their authority in mandating that every American purchase health insurance. "This ruling strengthens my lawsuit which currently awaits a hearing in a Missouri federal courtroom. This also boosts the efforts of more 20 other states that will bring their arguments before a Florida federal judge on Thursday. “With an overwhelming majority of states joining this constitutional challenge, I am calling on Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster to join me in this legal effort on behalf of the people of the Great State of Missouri. "Nearly one year ago, we watched as this law was passed in a series of back room deals and bribes, leaving cash strapped states like Missouri to cover the hefty tab. But now, with our continued efforts across state lines and with the new Congress expected to begin efforts on repealing and replacing this law with true, systematic health care reform, we are one step closer to putting an end to Washington’s attempt to control our health care system in America." According to multiple reports, a federal judge in Virginia has ruled that part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act — Obamacare — is unconstitutional.
The ruling by District Judge Henry Hudson says the law “exceeds the constitutional boundaries of congressional power” by requiring individuals to purchase health care coverage under the “individual mandate.” It is the first federal ruling against the law. “Neither the Supreme Court nor any federal circuit court of appeals has extended Commerce Clause powers to compel an individual to involuntarily enter the stream of commerce by purchasing a commodity in the private market,” Hudson wrote. “In doing so, enactment of the [individual mandate] exceeds the Commerce Clause powers vested in Congress under Article I .” Crucially, however, Hudson refused to issue an injunction preventing the implementation of the law, and ruled that the unconstitutional parts of it could be severed from the whole. read more |
