A federal judge temporarily blocked the Obama administration Monday from using federal dollars to fund expanded human embryonic stem cell research, saying the research involves the destruction of embryos.
The ruling comes after the National Institutes of Health last year issued new guidelines permitting federal funding for research on certain stem cell lines that had already been created. The court challenge was brought by adult stem cell researchers who (read more) One of the biggest targets should the GOP regain control of either the U.S. House or Senate in November's elections, according to many polls, will be Obamacare, the president's plan that effectively nationalized the decision-making process for health-care issues.
But a little-reported move to begin demolition of the health-care system takeover already is pending in the House and has gained about three-quarters of the support it needs to repeal the law that demands citizens buy insurance or pay financial penalties. The discharge petition sponsored by Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, had collected 162 signatures of the 218 it would need to advance even in the face of continued opposition from Obamacare promoter House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Under the provisions of the discharge procedures in the House, such a move is required to have the support of 218 members, a majority, of the 435-member chamber before moving forward. The proposal states: "Pursuant to clause 2 of rule XV, I, Steve King of Iowa, move to discharge the Committees on Energy and Commerce, Ways and Means, Education and Labor, the Judiciary, Natural Resources, Rules, House Administration and Appropriations from the consideration of the bill (H.R. 4972) to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which was referred to said committees on March 25, 2010, in support of which motion the undersigned Members of the House of Representatives affix their signatures." Advocates say constituents need to call their representatives to tell them to get on board right away so that the petition is positioned to move forward whether or not the GOP becomes the majority in the House after the 2010 fall elections. The move by King also has prompted an online petition campaign to rally the public to the cause. read more Obamacare has landed in Denver, where doctors at a pain-management clinic have been told they must stop treating patients with a successful process that extracts their own adult stem cells, cultivates them and then reinjects them to stimulate growth in damaged limbs.
The word of the dispute comes from Dr. Christopher Centeno of the Centeno Schultz clinic, whose Regenexx, or Regenerative Sciences Inc., has been successfully treatingpatients with the process for several years. Centeno confirms his work provides a much less costly and significantly more convenient alternative to knee or hip joint replacement surgeries, which sometimes require a year or more of recuperation. read more Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- When the Senate comes back from its August recess, the pro-abortion Democrats who control the chamber will bring back a campaign finance bill that pro-life groups oppose because it will limit their free speech. Last month, they failed to get enough votes to stop a Republican filibuster against the DISCLOSE Act.
The bill would place stringent limits on the ability of grassroots groups to communicate to the public about legislation and elections. Senate Republicans filibustered the legislation and Democrats held a cloture vote late last month where they need 60 votes to be able to stop the filibuster and move towards a vote on the bill itself. However, they were unable to peel off any Republicans to support the cloture vote and lost by a 57-41 margin. read more Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The president of a nationwide pro-life group says Americans, regardless of their opinion on abortion, should stand up against a move in the Senate to allow abortions at taxpayer-funded U.S. military base hospitals. Americans United for Life president Charmaine Yoest talked about the coming battle.
"Every American opposed to taxpayer-funded abortion should be aware of a major legislative battle coming in September," Yoest says. "When the Senate reconvenes, debate is expected to begin on this year’s Department of Defense (DOD) Authorization bill." "Last May, when the Senate Armed Services Committee was putting this bill together, Senator Roland Burris (D-IL) added an amendment that would strike a provision in the U.S. Code that prohibits DOD medical personnel or facilities from performing abortions The Senate Armed Services Committee voted 15-12 for the amendment with all Republicans and Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson voting against it and all other Democrats voting for it. Go to this page to contact your senators and urge opposition to abortions at U.S. military bases. Palin calls the group a bunch of "radicals" who are wrong to attack other women over one issue.
The pro-abortion campaign includes a woman dressed in a bear costume attacking Palin and other pro-life women candidates, whom she has dubbed "mama grizzlies." "Who hijacked the term 'feminist'?'" Palin asked in a comment on Twitter. "A cackle of radicals who want to crucify other women with whom they disagree on a singular issue." "It's ironic and passe'," Palin added. read more Columbus, OH (LifeNews.com) -- A pro-life group released new documents today from a former abortion facility staffer showing two women injured medically by botched abortions in Columbus, Ohio in the last two months. The organization says it and other documents show women are injured more frequently than most people understand.
An abortion whistle blower provided documentation to Operation Rescue showing disturbing information about two botched abortions that took place at different abortion businesses in the Ohio state capital in the last month. "It is our understanding from conversations with our confidential sources in Ohio that abortion patients in Columbus end up in the local emergency rooms with alarming frequency," OR president Troy Newman told LifeNews.com today. read more The Archdiocese of St. Louis is launching a new ministry to reach out to men affected by abortion.

However the enactment of Obama care will have some important policy and political implications that will last well beyond 2010. This is especially the case for the pro-life movement in America.
From a policy perspective, the passage of Obama care is clearly a setback for pro-lifers. However, the damage is not irreversible.
