In an important victory for the unborn in Texas, the court dismissed the claims of the Center for Reproductive Rights and Justice Sam Sparks in a stunning opinion that confirmed the sanctity of life and validated the efforts of Texas pro-life organizations, lawmakers, and Gov. Rick Perry. From the Associated Press: A three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans overturned U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks’ temporary order against enforcing the law, saying Sparks was incorrect to rule that doctors who oppose it had a substantial chance of winning their case. The court’s opinion systematically dismantles the argument that the Texas law infringes on the free speech rights of doctors and patients, one of the key arguments for not enforcing the law. “The required disclosures of a sonogram, the fetal heartbeat, and their medical descriptions are the epitome of truthful, non-misleading information,” the opinion concluded. The judges went on to shoot down the Center for Reproductive Right’s claim that the law condescended to women by recognizing the importance of providing all pertinent information to a woman before an abortion, including factual information about her baby: “‘Relevant’ informed consent may entail not only the physical and psychological risks to the expectant mother facing this ‘difficult moral decision,’ but also the state’s legitimate interests in ‘protecting the potential life within her,’” Chief Judge Edith H. Jones wrote in the appeals court decision… “The point of informed consent laws is to allow the patient to evaluate her condition and render her best decision under difficult circumstances,” Jones wrote. “Denying her up to date medical information is more of an abuse to her ability to decide than providing the information.” (link to full article) Today, I was delighted to discover that the retail store, Target, featured a little boy with Down’s Syndrome as one of their models in last week’s ad. They didn’t specifically mention that the cute kid had Down’s Syndrome, but those who are paying attention will notice. A father who blogs about his son with Down’s Syndrome called attention to Target’s ad and praised the store for being inclusive of children with disabilities.
In this father’s words (he blogs as “Noah’s dad”): “They said thatpeople born with Down syndrome deserve to be treated the sameas every other person on this planet. They said it’s important for the world to see people born with disabilities with a fresh set of eyes. That it’s time for us to lay down all the inaccurate stereotypes from the past and move forward embracing the future with true and accurate ones.” (read more) A 14-year-old girl in Corpus Christi, TX, received a temporary restraining order on Dec. 21 to stop her family from forcing her to get an abortion. A state district judge appointed an attorney for the teen and extended the restraining order until Jan. 19, when a hearing will determine whether the order will remain in place for the duration of the girl’s pregnancy.
Thus far, the girl has been represented by Stephen Casey, an attorney for the Austin organization Texas Center for Defense of Life....There are several disturbing things about this story. First and foremost, that her family members are trying to force her to kill her baby. Second, that the judge in the case has only protected her from these people for two weeks. Third, that the “pro-choice” blogs are staying very quiet about the case. So much for choice! Santorum, after trailing Mitt Romney by merely 8 votes in the Tuesday Iowa caucus vote, is now in second place among Republican voters in the race for the party’s 2012 presidential nomination, according to a new Rasmussen poll. “The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey, taken the night after the caucuses, shows Romney again in first place with support from 29% of Likely Republican Primary Voters, followed by Santorum with 21%,” Rasmussen noted today. “Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who led the pack in late November with 38% of the vote, now runs third with 16%.” (link to full article) According to its latest annual report, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) received $487.4 million in tax dollars over a twelve-month period and performed 329,445 abortions.
Previous Planned Parenthood annual reports showed total funding from “government grants and contracts” (which were $363.2 million in 2009), while this year’s report also accounts for payments from Medicaid managed care plans among the payments the group receives from government . (read full article) Last week the 2009-2010 Planned Parenthood annual report was released and the data shows that abortion remains the overwhelming pregnancy-related “service” provided. The chart below visually reflects the 329,445 reported terminations performed compared to 31,098 prenatal services and 841 adoption referrals.
This new data confirms Planned Parenthood’s position as the largest U.S. abortion provider and shows that more than ten terminations are performed for every instance of prenatal care provided. Furthermore, Planned Parenthood aborted 391 children for every adoption referral made in 2010. This data covers all Planned Parenthood affiliates within the United States. (link to article with graphs of data) Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell approved new regulations that ”will make it more difficult for clinics providing abortions to operate and potentially close down most of the state’s 22 facilities”http://washingtonexaminer.com/blogs/capital-land/2011/12/mcdonnell-approves-sweeping-abortion-changes/2045296#ixzz1i3AQv7Gd.
The new health rules are not onerous: They require that facilities that perform abortion “to comply with standards for surgery centers constructed after 2010 — from expanding the width of hallways and the size of operating rooms to providing covered entrances and increasing the number of parking spaces at a facility … They also will require increased medical staffing and allow for unannounced inspections of the clinics and reviews of individual patients’ records” http://www2.timesdispatch.com/news/virginia-politics/2011/sep/15/25/pro-choice-anti-abortion-advocates-address-regulat-ar-1312067/. The necessity of these standards is demonstrated by the news that two physicians who practiced at a now-shuttered abortion clinic in Maryland have been “charged with multiple counts of murder under the state’s viable fetus law” (http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/2-doctors-accused-of-performing-late-term-abortions-in-md-arrested-and-charged-with-murder/2011/12/30/gIQAfhXOQP_story.html). No Republican candidate is running away with the contest in Iowa, according to a new surveyconducted by the PPP polling firm. The survey shows former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum are all within two percent of each other in the Hawkeye state. Paul leads with 20 percent of the vote to 19 percent for Romney and 18 percent for Santorum. However, while Paul and Romney have largely retained the support they have had in recent weeks, Santorum has doubled his and the momentum gives him a chance to carry the first state and build momentum leading into New Hampshire and South Carolina — both states where Romney currently leads. “The momentum in the race is completely on Santorum’s side. He’s moved up 8 points since a PPP poll earlier in the week, while no one else has seen more than a one point gain in their support,” PPP notes. “Among voters who say they decided who to vote for in the last seven days he leads Romney 29-17 with Paul and Gingrich both at 13.” (link to full article) |
